In a statement posted Monday, Erika said the event was “traumatic” and described it as another example of rising political violence in the country. She added that she plans to address the incident further on The Charlie Kirk Show later this week.
The shooting happened Saturday outside the Washington Hilton during the annual dinner event. Reports say a gunman rushed a security checkpoint before being quickly apprehended. A Secret Service agent was injured but survived after being protected by a ballistic vest. Senior officials, including President Donald Trump and other members of the administration, were evacuated safely.
Video clips circulating online showed Erika crying and saying she wanted to go home as security escorted attendees out.
Her reaction drew strong sympathy from many people online, especially given that her husband, Charlie Kirk, was killed in a separate shooting in 2025. Others criticized commentary mocking her emotional response.
The incident has renewed debate about political violence, public safety at major events, and the human toll such moments can have on people directly affected.
